What Internet Is Available in the Northwoods? The Question Every Buyer Asks

Title card for the article: What Internet Is Available in the Northwoods? The Question Every Buyer Asks

The first question I get

People come north to be in the woods and on the water. Then, almost before anything else, they ask me: what internet is available there?

Buyers ask it. Agents bringing out-of-town clients ask it. It makes sense. Whether you are working from the cabin, streaming at night or keeping the grandkids happy on a rainy weekend, the answer matters. At Venture North Real Estate Co I answer that on almost every showing in the Northwoods.

The short answer

In the areas I work, the options are essentially Brightspeed, Spectrum and Starlink. Most properties can get at least one of them. Which one, and how well it works, depends on the exact address.

Why it depends on the address

Internet up here is not like internet in a city. Two homes on the same road can have different choices. A provider may serve the house a mile closer to town and stop before yours. A cable or fiber line may run on one side of a lake and not the other.

That is why I never promise a buyer a specific provider or speed. I can tell you what is typical. Only the provider can tell you what reaches a particular house.

A note on Starlink in the woods

Starlink works from a dish that needs a clear view of the sky. That is a fair question in the Northwoods, where tall pines and hardwoods are part of the appeal. A lot of properties have a spot that works, such as a roofline, a pole or a clearing. Some wooded lots take more thought. If you are leaning toward Starlink, ask where the dish would go and whether anything is in the way.

How to check before you make an offer

  • Check the address with each provider. Each of them has an address lookup on its own website. Use theirs, not a third-party list.
  • Ask the seller what they use. What they have, what they pay and whether they are happy with it tells you more than any map.
  • Ask how long setup takes. A new install can take time in a rural area. Plan for that if you need internet the day you move in.
  • Test it if you can. If you are touring a place you are serious about, run a speed test on your phone over its Wi-Fi.

If you work from home, make this a question before the offer, not after closing.

What I do for my buyers

When a buyer tells me internet matters, I ask the seller what the property uses and flag it early, so it is part of the decision. It sits alongside the septic, the well, the survey and winter access on the list of things worth knowing up front. My post on the questions to ask before you fall in love with a Northwoods cabin covers the rest.

Where to go from here

If you are looking at cabins and second homes or waterfront and lake homes in Crivitz and Surrounding Areas, my Northwoods Buyer's Guide goes through what to ask. Or get in touch and tell me what you need your internet to do. We will start there.
