Cabins and Second Homes in the Northwoods

A cabin is a lifestyle purchase. The details are worth getting right.

A cabin is a lifestyle purchase

A cabin is rarely bought with a spreadsheet. It is bought for the weekends, for the trails and the water, and for the place the whole family can gather. I love helping people find that, and I also want you to buy with your eyes open.

I am Kathryn Conard of Venture North Real Estate Co in Crivitz. Many of my cabin buyers live in Green Bay or elsewhere in Wisconsin, and they want someone local to help them get it right.

Weekend place or year-round?

How you will use the cabin changes what you should look for. A place you will visit on weekends is a different purchase from one you plan to live in. Tell me whether it is for summers, for hunting season, for winter, or for all of it, and we will look for the right fit.

What a cabin needs that a house does not

Ask these before you fall in love:

  • Who plows the road in winter, and how quickly?
  • How is the cabin heated, and what does that cost to run?
  • Is the water from a well, and is there a septic system? Where are the records?
  • What has to be done to protect the plumbing when nobody is there?
  • How are the internet and cell service?

The answers change what a cabin is worth to you. I will help you find them out.

Cabins in the woods and on the water

Some cabins sit on a lake or river. Others are tucked into acreage with trails and room for UTVs, boats and trailers. If the water matters, see waterfront and lake homes. If you want land to go with it, see recreational and hunting land.

Owning it from a distance

If you live hours away, you will not be able to check on the place every week. I can point you to local professionals for inspections, surveys and the questions above, and my Northwoods Buyer's Guide has a checklist for the move. When you are ready to look, Crivitz and Surrounding Areas is where most of my cabin buyers start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I ask before buying a cabin?

Ask about winter road access, how it is heated, the well and septic and their records, how the plumbing is protected when empty, and internet and cell service.

Can you help if I live far away?

Yes. I can connect you with local professionals and walk you through what to check, so you can decide with the facts.

Is a cabin a good fit for year-round living?

It depends on the property. Ask about heat, road access in winter, and services, and we can find out before you make an offer.
